Olympics by Population
Inspired by
imnotandrei's post "Minor Olympic Post -- or useless statistics for the day", I was curious about the full stats for Olympics stats by population. So I wrote a CGI script to calculate the full table of countries and their Olympic medal counts.
Olympic Medals by Population
The Wikipedia page ranks countries by gold medals first, with silver and bronze medals only used as tie-breakers.
It's interesting to see how this goes. There are much greater fluctuations from small countries, obviously, so perhaps it would be better to group by regions - or to collect statistics over more years.
A web search shows some similar stats collected for earlier Olympics, including one of 2000 Olympics in Sydney, or a map and chart of all medals from 1996 to 2004. Cuba and Australia are consistently big winners, it seems.
