03:19 am - Hit that perfect beat, boy
Today I picked up a copy of the "Celtic Rock Tribute to the Cure" album by Seven Nations. And it turned out far better than I expected. I think even the reggae version of Love Song is starting to grow on me. There were a few very enjoyable tracks, most were listenable, and only Friday I'm in Love was judged not worth ripping.
Usually with something like this (often on Cleopatra Records), you get one decent track and the rest is unrepentant crap. It turned out far better than most of these discoveries have any right to.

09:14 pm - Yep, it's one of those.
Okay, I haven't done anything music-related in a while (I've thought about the lyric guessing game, but haven't mustered the energy) and my posting today has been minimal. So using these excuses I justify the random playlist meme thing )

08:26 pm - since it'll be a few days before I can get to my PCP
Both of my upper arms have developed persistent small (round, a few millimeters in diameter) bruises, or things that look like bruises, except they don't hurt, my arms feel fine, no itching, pain, nothing. On the other hand, they've been new for the past, um, few weeks maybe? and I'm starting to worry about them. I will see my doctor when I get back to Pasadena, but in the meantime, does anyone know offhand if they are a Dire Symptom of Something?

06:11 pm - Capital Scandal ep. 1 + Accumulated Webreadings.
[This post is exclusive to LiveJournal.]

Threat level: radroaches

Joe is at the bachelor's "party" (in reality, I was told, it is a staid dinner at a steakhouse) for his brother and I am at his folks' trying to work up the motivation to work on the FIC OF DOOM according to the plot plan that Joe came up for me. He must HATE it that I volunteered for and then got stuck on an Angel fic to the point of having to go to HIM for help. He finally said he would help me because that way I would finish it and get it out of my life and stop stressing out, READ: whining at him about it at every opportunity. I mean, he thought my whining about Paper Souls was bad. Anyway, back to work...

Guys, there is such a subsubgenre as Korean quasi-noir! We saw the first episode of the kdrama Capital Scandal, which is set during the Japanese occupation of Korea and involves a wastrel working for a newspaper, a heroine who runs a bookstore and works for the revolution, a courtesan, and a guy working for the Japanese police, with requisite angst. The costumes are hilariously brightly colored and over the top (bright pink Western-style suits? red hat with floral embroidery?), except where they are merely Korean (I don't know jack about the history of the hanbok but where they are colorful they are always VERY colorful). The music is jazzy. The swing dancing is so bad even I can tell it's bad. And, okay, there are also slapsticky comic interludes but I do not care! This is the new subsubgenre of my heart.

I have gotten to the bit in Mouse Guard RPG where someone who is not you "represents" your character and recounts how you've played that character over the past season and decides what new trait to give you. It is a very cool idea and it would scare the heck out of me. Interaction with other people! Aieeee! Possibly tabletop games and I are not a good fit. :-(

Webreadings: sci/tech/math, games, miscellany. )

"OMG! YES! I've been trying to figure out why that didn't work!"

05:24 pm - hate crimes
Just a reminder, the newly passed-by-the-Senate-but-not-yet-a-law-yet federal hate crimes bill doesn't just establish hate crimes on basis of gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

It also provides for enforcement against hate crimes based on disability, as [info]capriuni reminds us in the [info]no_pity community.

04:07 pm - (gay) america blog won't cover lateisha's murder
The murderer of Lateisha Green was convicted of manslaughter as a hate crime. But you won't read about that on John Aravosis' new "gay" AmericaBlog (or the "straight" one either.)

Instead there are currently two front-page articles about how homophobic black people are.

Green was an African-American trans woman.

03:17 pm - Wingspan in serious financial straits
Via the Tucson Weekly:

Wingspan, Tucson's LGBT community center and advocacy organization, is going through some major changes due to the economy.

The Range confirmed some difficult news this morning with Wingspan Executive Director Jason Cianciotto, after the organization held an emergency stakeholder meeting at the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona last night.

Cianciotto confirmed he has resigned, but will remain until the end of the month without salary to help the organization in what will be a big transition and shift, involving further layoffs and moving the agency into a new space.

Caz Springer, the organization's media and communications director, was let go, but will continue on until the end of the month. Alison Davison, the Southern Arizona Gender Alliance coordinator, remains, as does the organization's commitment to the transgender community.

The remaining staff also includes Courtney Jones, program director, as well the anti-violence program staff and Eon Youth staff that work with LGBT kids ages 13-23.

Evidently, the biggest challenge for Cianciotto and Wingspan was the unexpected collapse of the economy. Cianciotto joined Wingspan last year, coming onboard after an almost year-long search for the right ED. Unfortunately, the timing wasn't right for Cianciotto and his ideas had to be placed on hold while the organization had to figure out how to survive this downturn.

Wingspan's rent of almost $8,000 a month is a factor in the organization making a physical move. The Range was told that the landlord wasn't interested in renegotiating the lease agreement, but the lease doesn't end until 2010. Cianciotto says he can't comment further on the lease. However, the remaining staff will be moving across the street from its 425 E. 7th Street location into the Eon Youth Lounge space.

Crap.

10:55 am - wow, just wow
The racist horrorshow that is Pam's House Blend continues, as they talk some more about how black people are homophobic (but say little-to-nothing about racism in the LGB(t) community).

Particularly galling is yet another case of Autumn Sandeen attempting to be a moderator, in this thread.

First, Narra spews forth some typical-for-the-blend racist white gay resentment against dem negroes:

Whatever you do, don't trust anyone LGBT.

It was obviously a big mistake to try to win support from a key minority group like the black community by appealing to them with our LGBT struggles and being so rude and ridiculous as to assert that our struggle is ANYTHING like the black struggle. Clearly it was wrong headed and we have now been set straight by the black community leaders who would never concede any similarities exist because it would *gasp* align our two communities in a highly uncomfortable way......The black community does not want to be dragged down into the nasty LGBT struggle as they have (especially the Christians) risen up as high as ever before in this country and don't want to screw that up now by associating with us losers. And whatever they do, they will definitely not be trusting any LGBT POC to tell them ANYTHING about what being gay is like or how understanding more about it might lead to at least some empathy, if not outright votes in our favor.

So, thanks again for taking us impudent, white, high class, shiny, clueless gay folk and putting us in our place. End of story. No further discussion needed at this time.

Kevin Erickson replies:

Um...

Clearly you did not read the article. The author is an LGBT POC. His principle concern is the lack of understanding among LGBT folks about what a civil rights movement really looks like.

...and then this guy Michael Bedwell inexplicably goes off not on the author of the article being discussed, but on Bilerico's blogger, Alex Blaze:

PUHLEEZE

Little Alex @ Bilerico claims to be Latino but, if his dorky picture is any indication, he passes for white quite well, thank you.

What he doesn't pass for is the objective intellectual he thinks he is. Quoting him on anything is like quoting Pee Wee Herman on nuclear physics.

kukito, a Latino, responds angrily to the racism:

a moron is a moron is a moron

and Michael Bedwell is obviously in the front of that line. Latinos, like LGBT persons, can be black, white, yellow, red, or any combination of those. We don't need to "pass" for anything. Pee Wee Herman is probably much more intelligent than Bedwell, judging from his moronic comment.

...and the folks at the Blend clutch their pearls in shock, for someone has said something mean!

And so of course, Autumn comes along, and threatens kukito with banning, while simultaneously saying nothing about Bedwell. She's even got a cute little graphic to further make it clear that the racist, anti-Latina/o bullshit Bedwell posted was okay but a Latino person responding to that insult is not okay:

Personal Foul! Ad Hominem/Personal Attacks against fellow Blenders are Not Okay! The trap door opens next time.

Bedwell goes on to defend himself with yet more racist language, including continued attacks on Alex Blaze's ethnicity:

For anyone confused, my point was, when I thought that kevinerickson was trying to certify the superior credibility of Alex Blaze [rather than Granderson] because he's supposedly an "LGBT POC" was that, based on his photo [and name] alone no one would discriminate against him on the basis of his being "POC" because he didn't display any of the typical external cues to bigots.

If Granderson is an "LGBT POC" that doesn't a priori make him intelligent, insightful, or right...any more than it does the professional lesbian race card shark Jasmyne Cannick.

And this is not remarked upon by Autumn at all.

Because racism is okay at the Blend, but calling out racists for their racism? That's a personal attack and Autumn will getcha for it!

Update: I forgot to add, "a moron is a moron is a moron" is simply kukito echoing back Bedwell's own words. He also wrote this stuff:

The bottomline is that Granderson is playing the race card simply to defend Obama not on substance but because he's black [actually biracial but....]. AKA judging him "not by the content of his character but by the color of his skin." Somewhere Jasmyne Cannick is having a rare multiple orgasm.

"Playing the race card," check! "The black man is defending Obama because they're both black," check! "Obama isn't really black, he's biracial," check! Gratuitous quoting of MLK, check! Derogatory references to a lesbian based on her sexuality, check!

And none of this gets a whistle blown by Autumn Sandeen.

SomaFM is dubbing Apollo 11's ground to spacecraft communications with appropriately spacey music.

SomaFM could use some dosh, because of the bloody labels demanding a king's ransom.

08:03 am - great moments in lizard history
Me: "The cake is a lie!" * [xkcd]
Lizard: "What is a cake?"
Me: "!!!"

This is what happens when you bake muffins for the lizard's daycare for her last birthday and they reject them because they're not prepackaged. I should have baked a cake and selfishly kept it for home instead.

03:52 pm - Good weekend ahead!
Oh I do like summer hours! I finished work at 12 and went to the pub to celebrate Anne and Emma's birthdays, then I came home. I've now caught up with the ironing and "Ugly Betty", sorted out my Working with Children form for Reading Buddies and am about to play Civ IV.

Tomorrow is the birthday party of the fabulous [info]la_marquise_de who we don't see enough of and I hope to see many of you there.

On Sunday at 11am a group of us are running Race for Life in Reading at Prospect Park. Some of you have already generously sponsored us at the link below

http://www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/pi_it_girls

Also, I thought I'd bring my paper form to the party - so if you're feeling generous, pop by a cash machine on your way there! /cheeky mode.

I'm really hoping to beat last year's time of 35 minutes.

Snowy endorses this message.

11:57 pm - Uh oh, it's magic.
Tonight we had our excursion to see the newest of the Harry Potter films. And I would say it easily falls into place as my second or third favorite, but there were two I strongly disliked and one I don't remember. It's easy to bash the parts of the film that didn't go well (and lord knows I did, in the lobby afterward. Hint: It's the name of the movie! Try to make it mean something.) but there were also parts that did (relationships between characters, business happening on camera but not part of the main focus).

And most importantly of all, seeing this film reinspired me to get back to writing the *actual* seventh book of this series, Neville Longbottom and the Horcruxes, in which Harry Potter hunts down and destroys the horcruxes so that Neville (who in a surprise revelation actually *is* the chosen one) kicks Voldemort's ass across Hogwart's campus. Because Neville is a bad mother--.(I'm talkin' 'bout Longbottom.)

All in all, Coyote says three wags; good for matinee viewing or pay-per-view.

09:51 pm - Imaginary Hogwarts choices
At bedtime: "Cat or owl, cat or owl, cat or owl? I think I'll have to go with a cat. It'll come in at breakfast with a, a suspiciously thick collar, and a newspaper in its mouth. I'd give it asparagus."

We listened to bits of the moon landing anniversary "live" broadcast. I scattered floor wax all over and Moomin and I skated around with towels on our feet! Rook let us read his students' evaluations of his teaching and he pulled up a difficult stump for me in the garden. Bad moms coffee. Rest of day was boring. Did a million slow stretching exercises. Iced. No painkillers. Typing a little!

04:42 pm - woe.
66 pages into Burning Wheel book 1 and I am already convinced that (a) I am enamored of the system (in concept anyway) and (b) I would totally disastrously suck at it: I suck at characterization, I suck at acting, I suck at roleplaying...yeah.

Maybe I can get to spectate on someone else's campaign someday.

Anyone played this one? Thoughts?
